Modernizing a centuries-old art form
In his carvings, Michael Peuster brings animals, figures, and fantastical creatures to life in three dimensions, from a hummingbird or a school of fish to a frog carved from maw sit sit or an owl hidden inside a river-worn agate.
Every carving begins with a dialogue with the stone: its color zones, inclusions, and natural shape guide the design, so that no two pieces are ever alike. Working in rock crystal, tourmaline, amethyst, opal, rose quartz, and many other gemstones, Michael combines the centuries-old techniques of the Idar-Oberstein tradition with a contemporary and often playful eye.
